6 Sleep Disorders You Need to Know About

Sleeping is expected to be one of the most blissful parts of the day for most of us. It is the time when the body and the mind unwind after a hectic day and prepare you to take the world in your stride the next day.

But there are many who twist and turn throughout the entire night as they cannot sleep easily. For some, this can be an “once in a blue moon” kind of phenomenon but for others this can turn out to be of a regular occurrence.

This can happen due to temporary interventions of your normal routine, stress, illness or even travel. But if this problem is a regular occurrence and disrupt your life on a day-to-day basis then a serious kind of sleep disorder is what is responsible for your sleeplessness.

The sleep disorder can be much more than just interrupted sleep at night and daytime sleepiness. It can also have a serious impact on the physical and mental health leading to weight gain, memory problems and even taking a toll on your mood and energy.

  • Insomnia – The inability to fall asleep or sleeping is known as insomnia.  It can be caused by stress, hormones, jet lag, anxiety or digestive issues. It can also be a symptom of another condition and it is also very problematic for the overall health as it causes-

  • Problem in Concentrating
  • Impaired Work
  • Weight Gain

This is one problem that is quite common, and a majority of the people suffer from it. Mostly the older adults and women suffer from it.  There are 3 types of insomnia including –

  • Transient – This happens when insomnia lasts for a few nights at a time
  • Intermittent – This is when insomnia occurs periodically
  • Chronic – This occurs when a person suffers from insomnia on a daily basis at least for a month.
  • Sleep Apnea – Sleep apnea happens to be a treatable and common sleep disorder in which the breathing temporarily stops during the sleep as a result of which you wake up frequently. You may not remember the times when you wake up, but you are bound to feel exhausted throughout the next day that can make you irritable and depressed with a reduction in productivity. Sleep apnea is grave and can be said to be a life-threatening sleep disorder. That is why you should see a doctor before long in order to do away with this ailment.
  • Restless Leg Syndrome – Restless Leg Syndrome is said to be mostly hereditary in nature. Certain medications are also said to cause this and the pregnant women are quite prone to suffering from it. This one involves an irritable urge to move the legs. This usually occurs during the periods of rest or in the evening. The RLS patients can move or kick many-a-times at night and this happens almost every night. The decrease in alcohol and caffeine consumption along with exercise can help to treat this. Medications can be prescribed for special cases.
  • Narcolepsy – The narcolepsy is characterised by sleep attacks that can occur during the day.  This will make you feel very tired without any warning and fall asleep suddenly. Sleep paralysis can also be a result of this disorder that will make you almost immobile or unable to move immediately after waking up. Although the narcolepsy can occur naturally, but it is also associated with the neurological disorders like the multiple sclerosis.
  • Sleep-Walking and Other Problems – If you have a partner or you have grown up with a brother or a sister who used to walk the halls or scream in sleep, you already know how startling it can be. This type of a condition is known as parasomnia that causes abnormal movement during sleep. So, see a doctor immediately if you or a loved one suffers from this as you don’t want to put yourself or others in danger.
  • Bruxism -Bruxism or teeth grinding occurs mainly because of anxiety or excessive stress. The major symptom of this is headache or sore jaw at the time of waking up. You should avoid chewing anything that is not edible as through that, the jaw gets trained to clench. Most people who suffer from bruxism are prescribed with a sleep apnea mouth guard to protect the teeth, gums and jaw from the tremendous clenching during sleep.
